SUMMER DISCOVERY

Summer Discovery is a five-week summer academic program for students entering 1st – 8th grades. The program focuses on building academic skills in English, reading, and math to prevent the ‘summer slide’ that typically happens. Children will also have the opportunity to engage in art, music, technology, leadership and community service, career exploration, physical activity, and field trips that promote leadership skills and positive personal development.

Research demonstrates that low-income students lose two to three months in reading achievement over the summer, and the losses can be even greater for students learning English as a new language. Summer Discovery provides academic support for these students to bridge from one school year to the next, in a culturally familiar environment where many of the staff can relate to their culture and language. Students are engaged, learning, and playing at the same time. Individual academic needs are met through classroom assistants who work with children one-on-one and in small groups.
