La Plaza’s Latino Opportunity Center (LOC) provides Latinos with long-term solutions to poverty, fueling economic and social progress in the Latino Community. LOC is an empowerment-based workforce development program providing support to Latino adults seeking to transition from a job to a promising career.
LOC participants receive help in the following areas:
- Financial coaching
- Connecting to government income supports
- Seeking employment
- Entrepreneurship
- Educational opportunities
LOC staff are bilingual and bicultural, delivering services that are tailored for Latinos by Latinos. They provide case management to address individual barriers that hinder participation in education and workforce and collaborates with workforce partners to assist participants with job placement.
Statistics:
Fewer than 15% of Latinos have a college or professional degree and nearly one-half of Latino adults do not have a high school diploma or high school equivalency.
Data shows that Latinos in Marion County disproportionately live in poverty, at 35% compared to 20% of the total population and 13% of the white population.
In Marion County, nearly one-third of Latino children under 6 years old are living in poverty.
